Rainier and the Canadian Rockies t both of which I went to climb. Guides unwilling to go on Rainier's waist deep fresh snow, and had left Lake Louise because of [indecipherable] bad weather. In Alaska I got only to 8700 ft. on Mt Blackburn, of the Wrangell Mtns., 16,140 ft. But I had the most wonderful experience of the kind that I have ever had or dreamed of. I got up my own expedition, went where no one had ever been before, and was out 13 days on the ice and snow. I had four Alaska prospectors, - better than swiss guides, - and the first day two pack-horses and [indecipherable]. Then we packed the load on to a sled and tree dos and the men pulled, pushed and lifted it for two days more, over interminable crevasses and rotten snow bridges, to the foot of the mountain terrible, constant, unseasonable avalanches all over the two glaciers by which we tried to ascend made us abandon them after 4 1/2 days wasted. Then we took to a ridge and were getting up well when the storms set in and reduced supplies made it impossible to wait there for good weather. No one had ever been nearer than five miles to the base before and that only one of my men. Miss Annie Strawbridge of Philedelphia, has been up the Matterhorn this summer and I would like to propose her for the Alpine Club. Will you be kind enough to send me a [indecipherable]? Text Any textual data included in the document "My dear Judge Putnam, Your recent Telegram on behalf of the Alpine Club gave me the greatest pleasure. It was a long steady [indecipherable] to get to the top of Mt. Blackburn, not difficult climbing, but difficult going and so dangerous that there had the constant change of plans to suit conditions and to accommodate success to disaffection on the part of my very independent men. I started with seven men and nine dogs, dragging about 2000 lbs on 8 sleds and ended with 2 men dragging 600 lbs on 2 sleds. One dog left the 2nd day, 3 men the 13th day with 2 dogs, and 2 more men with the other 6 dogs on the 19th day. It took 33 days because of being just too late in the season and as it was we should very likely not have escaped either an avalanche on the steep part of being swallowed up in one of the many crevasses that were opening all about our 8700 ft. camp on the way down. Our route was up Barrett Glacier, the same bad one that I tried last year. Part of it was a 76° slope in a gulch where ice cliffs broke off above on both sides all the time after 8 A.M., with snow finally so deep to break trail up that I could make only 3 inches headway at a time with one knee at a time. The load had to be hauled up on a sled consisting of snowshoes, which were worn all the time when it was not too steep. The coldness of the season made the snow hardly crust up. Some nights. at least not before midnight, and by 5 A.M. the sun had melted it enough to cause difficulty and danger too of avalanches. We travelled entirely at night for the last week. Two slides swept over us, one at 2 A.M., but we had calculated our route rightly, rushed for shelter under an ice cliff and got only an inch of snow spray. One bad avalanche went down our steep gulch just a few hours after we had come up it. I wish I could write more, but I am just leaving for a hunting trip and to write up Blackburn, traveling 100 m. to the White River through woods where for 60 m. we shall [indecipherable], build a boat, and float to the Yukon. Mail will reach me somewhere, via Cordova, if sent there, in a few weeks. I have splendid men. I owe everything to Mr. George W. Handy, of Cordova, a German, and I would be indebted to you if you would propose his name with me for the Alpine Club. His optimism, hard and intelligent work, and good judgment, as well as his fearless disposition got me up. He was the only one that went on top with me. We think it 17,000' high, but Mr. Bryant [indecipherable] got out of order somehow above 12,400, so it registered 23,000' on top, which it certainly was not. We had a fine view and found the Geolog. Survey map on the whole pretty correct. Text Any textual data included in the document My dear Judge Putnam Your letter of the 1st has reached me here, and brings interesting news in regard to Mr. Palmer's successful climbs. He is as unwilling to be beaten as I am I think. I have met the Parkers, Mr. Belmore H. Browne, and Merl La Voy, their extra [indecipherable] and have seen the letters and pictures. Mt. McKinley was different in every particular from Blackburn. They got within 300 ft. of the top and really overcame all of its difficulties, so that I think their really great achievement should count as a first ascent. As mountaineering it sounds to me no more difficult than Blackburn most it not so bad nor so dangerous, but it is far larger, colder, higher, and a greater endurance test than Blackburn on that account. Blizzards kept them from the final easy summit twice, and their margins of food prevented a third attempt. Mr. Brown seems to me to be the real [indecipherable] of the try, modest, a real sport in his fairness and ability, and the one that did all the hard work and organization, and led and found the way. I urged him to ask Prof. Parker to nominate him to the Alpine Club, with me for seconder. He is exactly the type of man that I personally most welcome to the Club, an educated gentleman and a real mountaineer. I want to suggest his name as guest and chief speaker at our annual dinner. He would not be as academic and dull as Prof. Parker and could give a far more vivid and intelligible story of the [indecipherable]. He tells me that his pictures have turned out finely, and he leaves in a few days for N.Y., where he is to spend the winter. He is to write three or more articles on McKinley for the "World Today." As to lecturing in Brooklyn, I shall be happy to do so if you want me to, but I have to charge $50 and my expenses, because of the cost of such expeditions and the slides. I could speak on "The Ascent of Mt. Blackburn, Alaska" or "Through the Alaskan Wilderness." Your encouragement to write a book is grateful, and I may try. I have enough to say and ample illustrations, but no confidence in my ability or justification in presenting it to a publisher and readers. I don't want to spend months for nothing while the world needs real service from able bodied workers like me. I am returning shortly via Glacier National Park, which I shall observe as a possible camping ground for the Alpine Club. The N.E. side of Mt. Rainier would seem to me a better place for us, and Mr. [indecipherable] Curtis of Seattle, a good guide to it. Was he elected? He has received no notification, although proposed months ago.
